Son of Sarah Christian Matthews (burial unknown), 1st wife of William F Matthews.

Enlisted March 25, 1862 in Barnwell, South Carolina in the Confederate States Army. He was mustered in Company H, 2nd South Carolina Artillery.

(special thanks to Fran Bundy #47078032 for the following info) Anne Dodenhoff of Charleston, SC, with whom I am related, informed me of some incorrect data on this memorial. Gideon was the son of William F Matthews and Sarah Christian Matthews. Sarah was the 1st wife of William.

(special thanks to Bing Chambers for the following info) - Gideon Christian Matthews was killed on 22 August 1863 and not 7 September 1863. This is directly from his service record.

(special thanks to R.O. Williams for the following info) - Gideon Matthews was born on Oct 24, 1824. He was killed at Battery Wagner on Morris Island, South Carolina.

(special thanks to acpflute #47147379 for the following info) Gideon Christian Matthews, Sr. was the son of William F. Matthews & Martha "Patsy" Willis. They are buried on her parents land 5 miles from Williston. There is information on the Willis/Matthews family on the Williston website. Look under the topic "Churches". In the third paragraph, it says William F. Matthews and his son Gideon C. Matthews, Sr. were the first deacons of the Williston Baptist Church.
