HAMILTON — Robert D. Paul, aged 96, died on July 4th, 2010 at his home in Hamilton.

Born in Oneida, Bob graduated from Oneida High School in 1931 with a penchant for math and science. He went to the School of Applied Science at Syracuse University where he majored in chemical engineering. Upon graduation in 1935, he came to Hamilton and, with the help of his father, built a gas station and established Robert Paul Petroleum. For the next 42 years the business expanded as Bob became a Shell jobber and Goodyear tire dealer. The business served commercial and retail customers throughout Madison County. It was not unusual to get a phone call in the middle of the night and dead of winter from someone who forgot to check his fuel oil tank, which Bob would fill (albeit begrudgingly) regardless of the hour.

While building the business and developing lasting friendships, Bob's life changed. He married a lively Norwegian from Hamilton, Elizabeth Anderson, in 1940 and he was conscripted into the Army in 1942. For the next 3 years, Elizabeth ran the business while Bob served stateside. Along the way they had two children, Robert and Carol.

Upon his return from the Army, in addition to his business, Bob threw himself into local politics, serving as a village trustee from 1950-1953 and as mayor from 1953-1957. Continuing his commitment to the community, Bob served for sixteen years as the Hamilton representative on the Madison County Board of Supervisors (1965-1979,) serving three terms as chairman. His loyalty to the Republican Party was steadfast throughout his life. He was a charter member of Hamilton's Rotary Club where he served as president, a Mason, and chairman of the College-Community Relations Committee. As a director of the Oneida Savings Bank, Bob became involved in property appraisals and greatly enjoyed traveling around the county with fellow trustees as they did mortgage assessments. He was honored by the Rotary Club with Roses for the Living Award in 1966 and received Colgate's Civic Award in 1975.

Bob's life was distinguished by the wonderful friendships he made through his business and political contacts, and by his devotion to family. He said more than once to his wife, "Betty, we've been awfully lucky in life."

He is survived by his children Robert (Diane Williams) Paul and Carol (Tom) Perloff; grandchildren, Jennifer (David Dionisio), Andrew (Sarah), David (Alissa Moody) and Samuel (Erin) Perloff and Alexandra Paul; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ben Dionsio and Henry Perloff; sister, Ruth Kushner, his two sisters-in-law, Lucy Paul and June Chambers and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family of Robert D. Paul of Hamilton, will be receiving visitors on Saturday, July 10 from 3-5 p.m. at Bob's house, Payne Street, Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413 or the Hamilton Public Library, 13 Broad St., Hamilton, NY 13346. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Paul Funeral Home, Madison, N.Y.
