After the Civil War, he was appointed district tax commissioner by President Andrew Johnson. When he died, he was state senator-elect from Nassau County. In 1868, he acquired the abandoned home of Dr. John Lesesne, which today is one of the oldest inhabited houses on Amelia Island.
