BURNS PROVE FATAL TO MRS. FERD DIETZ
Victim of Gas Explosion at Walcott Home a Week Ago.....
Surrounded by her family, near relatives and friends, Mrs Ferdinand Dietz passed away peacefully last night at 6:20 o'clock at the home of John Dietz, just a week after an unfortunate accident in which she sustained burns which resulted in her death. It was on Wednesday evening down the stairway she found that about her duties in her home, smelled escaping gas and after an effort to locate the source, found that it was coming from the cellar. Going down the stairway she found that it was too dark to see to any advantage. She struck a match and a terrific explosion followed immediately. Her clothing caught afire and she rushed to the home of John Dietz, an uncle of her husband's who lives across the street. The burning clothing was immediately extinguished and medical aid was summoned, but the fire had burned her fatally before assistance could reach her. She was carried into the home of Mr Dietz and had remained there since, being in too serious a condition to be moved to her own home. It was soon ascertained that if Mrs Dietz should survive the accident and nervous shock atttendant, she would be a hopeless cripple during the remainder of her life. One limb would have had to be amputated and one lower arm would also have been sacrificed. But she was unable to stand the effects of an operation and it was feared that she would not survive anyway although scant hopes have been entertained for her ultimate recovery. Gradually she lost strength and it was seen that she could not rally. All of the relatives were summoned to the bedside and were present last night when she peacefully dropped into the sleep from which will never awake in this earth.
Mrs Dietz whose maiden name was Edith Cass, way born in Harlan, Ia., June 8, 1877, and spent her early days in this locality. Her marriage to Ferdinand Dietz was celebrated in January, 1895, and the happy couple had made their home in Walcott since.
Five children, Edith aged 14 years, Ferdinand, aged 12 years, years, Phillip, aged 9 years, Donald, aged 7 years, and Riley, aged 5 years, her husband, Ferdinand Dietz, her parents, Mr and Mrs Riley Cass, of Tonkawa, Okla, one sister and one brother, Riley Cass Jr of Colorado Springs, Colo, and one sister-in-law, Mrs L. J. Beh, of Harlan, Ia. live to mourn her death.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home in Walcott. Burial will be made in Walcott Cemetery.
