Joseph went by Joel as a child, and young adulthood, and later went by Joseph. His parents were Benjamin and Hannah (Irish) Roby. In 1850 the US Census shows the family living in Mount Pleasant, Green County, Wisconsin, and his father was a farmer. That year he was the youngest of five children: Henry age 8, Hazard age 6, Reuben age 4, Esther age 2, and Joel age 1.

In 1860 the family lived in the town of Exeter, Green County, Wisconsin, the father still a farmer. The family consisted of the parents and nine children, the older three sons were farmers too, presumably working with their father on the family farm.

In 1862 and 1863 his three oldest brothers enlisted in the Union Army:
Henry - Company K, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry, later became a doctor. Died in Kansas age 78.
Hazard - Company K, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry, killed at Resaca, GA, 15 May 1864.
Reuben - Company H, 38th Wisconsin Infantry, was a farmer like his father, retired to San Diego, died there at age 66.

Joel H. Roby, a farmer in Delaware Township, Polk County, Iowa, son of Benj. Roby and Hannah Irish, married at Sac City, IA, 16 Sep 1886, Celina R. Belding of Cedar Township, Iowa. She was the daughter of C. Z. Belding and J. N. South. Marriage document available at Ancestry.com, Iowa, U.S., Marriage Records, 1880-1947.

Lewis Roby, b. 4 Nov 1889 at Sac County, Iowa. He died 10 Sep 1890 in Sac County, Iowa, less than ten months old.
