Police Will Pay Honor To Sergeant McKnight
With departmental honors, Sergt. George Edward McKnight, head jailer of the city jail for the last nine years, will be buried tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's Church, 20th Avenue South and dearborn Street, by the Seattle Police Department.
The casket will be escorted from the home to the church by a squad of police with colors. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The color bearers and guard will be Sergeants W.H. Horn and L.L. Force and Patrolmen E.H. Davey and K.L. Webb. Pallbearers named are Captains C.E. Dothlin, M. Powers, A.C. Sullivan, C.G. Bannick, Jailer F.P. Wright and Patrolman W. Hughett. Chief of Police W.H. Searing, who will attend the funeral, has ordered all members of the second patrol to report to police headquarters at 8 o'clock in full uniform.
Sergeant McKnight, who died after a year's illness last Thursday, was a native of Medford, Ont., Canada. He was 55 years old. Graduating from the University of Ontario, he crossed the boundary line into Wisconsin 33 years ago, taking a professorship in one of the colleges of that state.
After two years in Wisconsin he moved to Tacoma, where he expected to teach school, but he went into business instead, after having been married there. Eventually he went in for police work and settled in Bellingham, where he was police chief five years before moving to Seattle 18 years ago. Three years after coming here he entered the Seattle Police Department. He rose to a sergeantcy nine years ago.
Besides the surviving widow, Sarah McKnight, the police sergeant left three sons and a daughter, Herbert L., Earl C., Ray and Frances. The family residence is at 2410 Jackson St.
