Eldest child of Charles and Virginia Spencer Blacknall. In 1875, at the age of 22, he married his first cousin Caroline who was then 18. Together they had 8 children; two died in infancy. At 14 he was a clerk in a country store. Later he worked in a Raleigh mercantile establishment and studied law under R. H. Battle. In 1871 he returned to Kittrell and started his own tobacco company and pursued his writing interests, sometimes using the pseudonym David Dodge. His articles were published in Atlantic Monthly, Oliver Twist, The Youth's Companion, and Kate Field's Washington. In 1888 he organized the Continental Plant Company, a highly successful nursery business specializing in strawberry plants..
