Mrs. J. M. Sloan Rites Wednesday

Mrs. J. M. Sloan died at her home in the northern part of town Tuesday afternoon at about 2 o'clock following a long illness, part of which time she had been in the hospital.
Funeral services will be held from the Seydler Funeral home Wednesday at 3 p.m. with burial to be in the Pilgrim cemetery at 4 p.m. Mrs. Sloan is a former resident of Pilgrim community, and is the mother of Mrs. Orvan McGinty and Mrs. Knapp Burnett, this city.

Final Rites Held For Mrs. Sloan

Final rites were held from the Seydler Funeral home Wednesday at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Bertha Sloan who died at her home in the city Tuesday at 1:50 p.m. Burial was in the Pilgrim cemetery with the Rev. T. Frank George, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, in charge of the services.
Mrs. Sloan, in ill health for a number of months, was born September 27, 1883, at Pilgrim, her parents being Mathilda Ferguson and James Avant, both natives of Texas and both natives of Texas and both deceased. On September 29, 1901, she was married to James Milliard Sloan who preceded her in death in 1936. The couple had made their home at Pilgrim, she later moving to Gonzales several years ago. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church.
Survivors include five sons: Orin, Zilmon, Ralph, James and Cecil, all of Gonzales; five daughters, Mrs. Lucille Burnett, Mrs. Edith Finch, Mrs. Adele McGinty, Mrs. Lois Jean Wilson, all of Gonzales, and Mrs. Doris Blanton of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Riley of Corpus Christi, and Mrs. Mary Parks of Kerrville; and three brothers, Frank and George Avant of Mercedes and Henry Avant of Decatur, Texas. Eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Avant, Billy Ross McGinty, Jack Finch, Nathan Avant, Grady Johnson and O. B. Edwards.
