He is the son of William D. and Mary Rainey Thomas. He married Jennie Vilette Carlin on 19 July 1899 in Greene County, Illinois.

Because in 1860 Leslie's parents live "Between the Creeks" (Apple Creek and Macoupin) in Greene County, IL, on a farm they own valued at $4,000, and are still living there on the farm in 1870 now valued at $20,750, it appears most likely Leslie was born there. They did get their mail from the Post Office in Carrollton but did not live in town.
