Mrs. Pauline Baker Hemingway, 79, widow of the co founders of this city died at 1 pm Wednesday October 11 after a long illness.
Mrs. Hemingway's late husband Dr. W. C. Hemingway and his two brothers founded Hemingway a Williamsburg County town later named in their honor.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 pm Thursday with the Rev. Reginald Thackson, pastor of the Hemingway Methodist Church, the Rev. Melvin Medlock, pastor of the Central Methodist Church of Florence and the Rev. C. J. Beard, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hemingway. Burial was in the Union Methodist Church near Hemingway.
Mrs. Hemingway was a daughter of the late Rev. William Boyd Baker, a Methodist minister, and Mrs. Louise LeGette Baker of Marion County.
Mrs. Hemingway lived in various sections of South Carolin where her father served as pastor and attended Columbia College. Her home was established in Hemingway in 1902.
She was a member of the Hemingway Methodist Church, held an honorary membership in the Women's Society of Christian Society, a member of the Church choir for many years, a member of the Hemingway Friendship Club and a member of the Columbia College Alumni Association.
Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Jack Cockfield of Hemingway and Mrs. Willis C. Ard of Florence; and a son Walter C. Hemingway of Hemingway.
Also a sister Miss Carrie Belle Baker; a brother Dr. H. L. Baker, both of Hemingway; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
