Purvis enlisted Feb 12, 1864, in Hannibal, MO, as a Private in Co. C of the 21st Missouri Infantry when he was just 17.

The REMARKS on his record state: Recruit absent in arrest at St. Louis, MO, since Nov 1864. Dis[charge] furnished. CMG states "Sentenced by G.C.M. [General Court Martial] to be hung on Jan 13, '65 for murder."
