PASTOR IS NAMED FOR HUNTINGTON

Rev. John Culliton Moved from Blessed Sacrament to St. Lawrence Parish

A Bridgeport priest was named pastor of St. Lawrence parish, Huntington today by Bishop Lawrence J. Sheehan. He is the Rev. John Culliton, assistant pastor of Blessed Sacrament church since Oct. 23, 1956 and for ten years previous to that a curate at St. Rose, Newtown. Father Culliton succeeds the Rev. Alfred J. Carmody, first pastor of St. Lawrence, who died July 1 in Hartford.

Native of Waterbury

Born in Waterbury, he moved to Bristol as a child with his parents. He completed his elementary education there prior to entering St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield, to prepare for studies for the priesthood.

He was assigned to St. Bernard's seminary, Rochester, N.Y. for philosophy and theology courses and completed his final year of theological work at St. Mary's seminary, Baltimore.

Father Culliton was ordained May 26, 1938 in Hartford and was subsequently assigned to St. Thomas parish, Waterbury.

Was Army Chaplain

He entered the Army Chaplain Corp Feb. 24, 1941, and served five years including two and a half in the Pacific theater of operations. He was separated from the service as a major in 1946 and was assigned to Newtown where he remained until he was appointed to Blessed Sacrament.

Sunday he will bid the East End parishioners farewell and will report to Huntington next week.

The Church of St. Lawrence, established in Oct., 1954 was to have been dedicated Sunday. However, the dedication service was postponed with the death of Father Carmody.

Father Culliton is expected to set a new date for the ceremony shortly after his arrival.
