Lewis Trombley came to Monroe Co., Michigan on the first steamer "Walk-in-the-Water" landing at Toledo (then Michigan Territory) in June of 1833. He was accompanied by his sister Julia, and her husband Horace Hill.

He was married to Sophia Gregory in about 1831 and they were the parents of ten children, only half surviving to adulthood: Horace Jerome; William W. who married Phoebe Perry; Phebe; Lewis Egbert who married Amelia Plumadore; and Victoria, wife of George E. Mead.
