Her father left home when Mary was a baby and her mother died when she was about nine years old. She lived with her grandfather and grandmother Schriber. She completed the 8th grade in a country school in Cloud County, Kansas.
Later she worked in a laundry in Pueblo, Colorado, then came to Nora and worked as a hired girl for Mr. and Mrs. George Thayer.
On April 7, 1921, she was united in marriage to Frank Lyman Thayer. They lived and farmed near Nora for many years. To this union one son, Cleo LaVerne, was born. Frank passed away March 24, 1965. Mary continued to live on the farm until January 30, 1969, when she moved to the Elk Creek Manor in Nelson. She had been a resident of the Nelson Good Samaritan Center since August of 1983.
She was baptized November 8, 1925, in the Christian Church of Nelson, by Rev. Arnold. When the Christian Church in Nora dissolved she transferred her membership to the Nelson Christian Church and taught Sunday School classes for several years. She was a member of the Bible Study Group, Christian Women's Fellowship and was president of the Golden Age Club for several years.
Mary loved to sew, crochet and make crafts. She made many craft items for her Sunday School classes. She also had a very beautiful flower garden. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Frank.
Survivors include her son, Cleo and his wife Ruth of Nora; two step grandchildren, Bernice McCorquodale and Donald Mohlman; three step great grandchildren, Brenda Negri, Clayton Mohlman and Jay Schriner; and five step great great grandchildren; cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 30, 1991, at 10:30 a.m. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ with Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Music was provided by Ken Fairbrother singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" with Ivan Schafer as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Donald Mohlman, Wayne, Dean and Marvin Carriker, Jay Schriner and Leonard Dana. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery near Superior, Nebraska. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
