Joseph Headley was born in New Jersey and enlisted in the military in Sussex County, New Jersey, during the spring of 1777 as a private in Col. Seeley's Regt. He served 3 years in all and served under Captain(s) Belty, Hill, Westbrook and Ribble. He later came to Licking County, Ohio after a short stay at the falls of the Licking, in Muskingum County, Ohio in February, 1815., and camped on the south fork near the present village of Jersey. Robert, father of Joseph, married Phebe (Baldwin) Gardner. Joseph was a farmer, Universalist. Children: Elizabeth, Peter, Dorothea, William, Samuel, Uzal, Lewis, Mary, Charles, Levina, Eunice.
