JENNINGS — A Mass of Christian burial for Julia Klein Ray, 79, lovingly referred to as "Oma" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2010, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Jennings. The Rev. Charles McMillin will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings.
The family requests visitation be 5:30-9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. Sunday. A rosary will be prayed by Mrs. Betty LeGros at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Surrounded by her loving family, Ms. Ray passed away on July 1 at 4 p.m. in Jennings American Legion Hospital.
Ms. Ray was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, on Feb. 6, 1931, to Olga Kunz and Albert Klein. She graduated from Fredericksburg High School and then moved to Louisiana, where she worked as a nurse's aide at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandra. She later worked at Jennings Guest House. She was a licensed beautician and also owned and operated Ray's Garden and Nursery. She attended LSU-Eunice, where she earned an associate degree in psychology. Julia worked at the Southwest State School in Iota until her retirement. After retirement she was able to devote more time to her family and favorite pastimes. Her faith and her family were her priorities. She was a Eucharistic minister and choir member at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church. She was involved in missionary work, traveling to Haiti, Costa Rica and various parts of the United States. She had the opportunity to make three pilgrimages to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. She also enjoyed her involvement in the charismatic movement. She enjoyed painting, reading and praying. Her greatest accomplishment was raising five boys who went on to become five Christian men. Their devotion and love for their mother was admirable and endless.
She is survived by her five sons, Richard of Welsh, Warren and wife Carol of Lafayette, Dr. Charles and fiance Susan of Jennings, Glenn and wife Janet of Broussard, and Lynn and wife Dee of Lafayette; one sister, Margaret K. Sauls of Gainesville, Ga.; one brother, Richard Klein of San Antonio, Texas; her loving grandchildren, Jeffrey, Erin, Lauren, Alex, Morgan, Garrett, Jordan, Jenna, Jillian, Grant, Jorja Grace, Rusty and Adam; and her great-grandchildren, Jace, Alyssa, Karly, Russell and Scott.
Ms. Ray was preceded in death by her parents, Olga and Albert Klein; siblings Florence K. Icke, William Klein, Anmarie Klein, Katherine K. Burell, Esther K. Yeater, Albert "Bert" Klein and Harol "Hal" Klein; and the father of her sons, Lawrence V. Ray.
Pallbearers will be her sons and grandsons.
Special thanks to the nurses and staff on the third floor of Jennings American Legion Hospital; the compassionate sitters; and to Betty Campbell for her thoughtfulness to stand vigil during this difficult time. A very heartfelt thank you to her son, Dr. Charles Ray, for his loving medical care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
