Katherine Janssen, 90, Pipestone, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 29 from 4-8 p.m. at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Methodist Church, Pipestone with Rev. Rod Stemme officiating.
Casket bearers will be Dona Langswierdt, Susan Johnson, James Barron, Michael Barron, Dennis Barron, Thomas Barron and Bonnie Peterson.
Interment will be in New Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone.

Katherine Elizabeth Janssen was born to Robert and Vera Ada (McNeil) Barron on Dec. 9, 1919 in Flandreau, S.D. She was raised on farms in various areas of eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota. When her parents purchased a farm in Aetna Township of Pipestone County she attended school in Verdi and Pipestone. After she completed high school in Pipestone she helped at home. She also did housework for people in Pipestone.
She married Arnold Janssen on June 16, 1940 at her parents' farm. Following their marriage they lived in Pipestone and Katie continued doing housework for others. She also worked at the Dairy Bar in Pipestone.

In 1949 she and her husband opened a candy store which they operated during the summer months for 24 years. When her son was in high school, she worked for home health, and she worked at the Good Samaritan Village. In 1989 she retired from the nursing home after working there for over 18 years.
On Sept. 3, 2001 Arnold preceded her in death. After his death she continued to live in their home in Pipestone.
In December 2008 Katie moved to Falls Landing in Pipestone. Then on June 9, 2009 she suffered a stroke and on June 14, 2009 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

She was a member of Peace United Methodist Church in Pipestone where she was active in the United Methodist Women and in the church circle.
She is survived by her son, Willis (Kathy) Janssen, Huntington, Md.; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; a brother, Donald Barron who died in 1978; her sister-in-law Helen Barron and her godchild niece, Julie Barron.
