Lake and Paulina Lake, who were a young couple living in Candor in 1860 and in Owego in 1865, but are not found in later Federal census records. It is believed that J. J. Lake was John J. Lake, son of Ebenezer Lake of Candor, Tioga, New York.
It is now believed that Kate Lake was the adopted child of Ebenezer and Rachel Lake of Candor. There is an adopted child named Catherine Gilland listed in the Lake house in the 1855 census and this is believed to be her and would explain why she can not be found in the 1850 census and why John J Lake would be the witness to her marriage in 1859.
