Jackie was born in Century, Escambia County, Florida; she died in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her father was from Dunn, North Carolina, where she grew up, and in high school she was a classmate of Movie Actress Ava Gardner.

She was the daughter of Evander Dempsey Jackson and Lula Henderson. Her siblings were Miles, George Dempsey, Willie Herschel, James, Irene, Leslie, and Vera Lee.

Jackie was a slender, well-figured lady. In her youth, she was a clothing model, and as an adult used that training as an employee in clothing sales in department stores.

Mamie Jackie Churchwell, 90, of the 200 block of Sequoia Road, died Aug. 1, 2004, in her residence. A native of Century, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Evander D. Jackson and Lula Henderson Jackson and the widow of Hillery Dempsey [sic] Churchwell.
Mrs. Churchwell retired as a shoe manager from Gaber Shoe Store. In earlier years, she was the bridal manager for Smith & Weltons and Rice Nachmans in Norfolk. She attended West Park Church of Christ, was a member and past president of Eastern Star Chapter No. 57, member of Norfolk Chapter of Parents Without Partners (PWP) and Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 239. In addition to her parents and loving husband, she was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Kay Frances Harrell. Survivors include a son-in-law, Lloyd Harrell Sr. of Blackshear, Ga.; niece and
guardian, Charlotte Jackson Zahn and husband Harry of Portsmouth; two great-nieces, Charisse Dunn and husband Kevin of Dallas, Texas and Colleen Zahn of Portsmouth; three grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral with Moose rites will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by Keith Lewis. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. An Eastern Star service will be held today at 7 p.m. in the Portsmouth Blvd. chapel of Sturtevant Funeral Home, afterwhich, the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 420 N. Center Drive, Suite 420, Norfolk, VA 23502.
