JESS CARTER

Jess Carter, 76, died unexpectedly Nov. 20 in the railroad crossing watchman's shanty in Atchison on Fourth street, where he had been visiting L. G. Hicks, crossing watchman about an hour. He had not been previously ill.

Funeral services were at the Sawin-Dyer chapel, Nov. 23 with the Rev. Harold Roberts officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon cemetery.

He was born at Nortonville Sept. 10, 1878, a son of J. T. and Angie Tuley Carter and moved to Atchison with his parents when a young man. His father was a horse buyer and liveryman and had a wide acquaintance throughout this area. Jess Carter was a lover of horses all his life. Until four years ago when he returned to Atchison, he spent several years on Ralph Price's farm at Oak Mills and lived in the Price home.

Surviving are a sister Miss Edith Carter, Atchison; a brother, Eugene Carter, Orlando, Fla.; four nieces, Mrs. Raymond Noland, Mrs. Jerome Courtney, Mrs. Lawrence Martin, all of Atchison and Mrs. Don Wilkin, Topeka.
