Harry Chandler, 88, of Norfolk, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at the Norfolk Veterans Home.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at St. Ben Cemetery in rural Lindsay with Louise Dohmen officiating. Military honors by American Legion post #261 of Lindsay and the Army National Guard. The Shriners will also participate in the service.

Harry Sylvester Chandler was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Omaha to Walter and Laura (Scarlett) Chandler. He grew up in Southeast Omaha. When he was 12, he was a Boy Scout and paper boy for the Omaha World Herald. He also delivered groceries and stocked shelves for Coons Grocery Store for 25 cents an hour. From ages 17 to 19 he worked in the CC Camps in the Black Hills constructing bridges and doing road work. In the early 1940's he worked at Armor and Kingon meat packing plants. He was drafted into the US Army and served from 1943 to 1946 where he marched from France to Germany as a foot soldier in WWII. He belonged to the 86th Blackhawk Division and 343rd Infantry Battalion Company G. Upon returning he worked at an auction house.

On Aug. 30, 1948, he married Anna Dohmen. With Anna's help he began his new and used furniture business which he ran until 1966. He then bought Klub 81 in Humphrey where he sold used cars, food and fuel. It was sold in 1979. Harry tried to retire, but failed and went back into business in Omaha beginning with a furniture business that evolved into a tanning salon. He ran that business until Dec. 2007. He was a lifelong member of the Free Masons, Shriners and the Tangier Mounted Patrol.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bill, Clyde, Walter and Jack; three sisters, Florence, Doris and Laura.

He is survived by one son, three daughters, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren
