PANHANDLE - Earl Leon (Red) Matthews, 62, of Panhandle died early Saturday in Amarillo's Northwest Texas Hospital.

The owner of Red's Ditching Service and a former farmer, he was a native of the Dimmitt area and a Panhandle resident for 25 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Panhandle.

He is survived by his wife, Frances of the home; son, David of Hereford; son, Darrell of Hereford; son, Dean of Panhandle; daughter, Debora of Amarillo; brother, Larry of Sedalia, Mo.; brother, Merle of Knob Noster, Mo.; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle with the Rev. Vernon O'Kelly, pastor of the church, officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Steve Rogers, a Methodist minister in Panhandle. Burial will follow in the Panhandle Cemetery.
