The family then moved to Washington County, Indiana were they again lived for a period of time. Nearing the Embraw River in 1826, the family was reduced to a cart and two young calves to pull it. They had been without water for some time when the calves smelled the river they upset the cart breaking John's Mother's leg.

Their first night in this area was spent east of Dead Man's grove, three miles from the site of Mattoon and the prairie grass was rank and tall beside the trail. Their supper was muskmelon, given to the by a pioneer during the day. The wolves were many and hungry. At night someone stood guard with a weapon. Later these boys hunted the wolves and grazed cattle. The father entered forty acres of land. The family, working for a few cents a day cradling wheat and huking corn made their way south to Cumberland County.

They sold their land in Coles county and bought forty acres in Cottonwood Township. This land was one mile south and 3/4 of a mile east of Johnstown. It was paid mostly by splitting and selling rails.
