Zarouhi Baltaian was born in Kirsehir, Turkey, date uncertain as exact records weren't kept. While October 17, 1907 was the date Zarouhi generally used since it was listed on her naturalization paperwork, prior to that earlier dates had been used. Her father's naturalization record lists Zarouhi's birthdate as December 1905, while the 1930 census had 1904 and the 1940 had 1906. Her wedding license lists March 1903, noting she was 18, but that might have been an overstatement. Another complicating factor is that the Julian Calendar that was used in Turkey, and so being born there in December 1905 might have actually been 1906. Her accepted birthdate of October 17 is used here as it was said she was born in the fall, most likely in either 1905 of 1906. The year of 1907 on her gravestone is not possible because her younger sister was born in either 1906 or 1907. Zarouhi also stated she was 16 years old when she married at the end of 1921, which would equate to being born in 1905, so that is the year used here along with her traditionally used birthdate of October 17.

Her family was threatened by but escaped the Armenian Genocide of 1915. They moved to Istanbul, and in 1920 her father and brother left for Philadelphia to get established there and bring the rest of the family. Zarouhi worked as a dressmaker along with her sister Zabel. It is possible they lived with their mother and her father there. Zarouhi, Zabel, and their mother arrived through Ellis Island in July 1921. Once in the United States, single Armenian men came calling on the sisters and a marriage was arranged for Zarouhi to Ardashes Dulgarian. The application was made December 28, 1921, and while it had been said they were married on New Years Eve, the priest Rev. Haig Yardumian certified they were were married on Monday, January 2, 1922. Zarouhi soon became pregnant, but she suffered a fall and delivered a still-born son on September 28 of that year. She had a daughter Anna the following year, then Rose, Paul, and George. Zarouhi lived to see many of her great-grandchildren. She died of heart problems in 1988.
