A. Nelson Caddell married Millie O'Neal (1812-1889), a daughter of Kindred O'Neal and Culia Hayles of Anson County. Some sources say his first name was Admiral, others that it was Aaron or Abner. He is said to have been a son of Daniel and Emelia Caddell of Moore County, NC, and a grandson of James Banks Caddell.

Nelson and Millie had at least three children: William Iverson Caddell (1844-1929, m. Minerva Clementine Stegall), George Kindred Caddell (1845-1927, m. Sarah Ellen LeGette) and Susan Adeline Caddell (c.1848/9-?).

Both the sons served in the Confederate Army, in Co. K, "The Anson Independents," of the 43rd NC Regiment. Both were wounded; and both were captured and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland.
