He is said to have been a son of Daniel and Emelia Caddell of Moore County, NC, and a grandson of James Banks Caddell.
Nelson and Millie had at least three children: William Iverson Caddell (1844-1929, m. Minerva Clementine Stegall), George Kindred Caddell (1845-1927, m. Sarah Ellen LeGette) and Susan Adeline Caddell (c.1848/9-?).
Both the sons served in the Confederate Army, in Co. K, "The Anson Independents," of the 43rd NC Regiment. Both were wounded; and both were captured and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland.
