Charles E. (C.E.X.) Smith, 72, a lifelong resident and farmer in Cedar Township, for the past several years flower gardener of Knox Country Club property at Lake Bracken,died at 12:30 this afternoon in his home south of Lake Bracken. Mr.Smith was afflicted with a stroke last Tuesday while he was in the yard of his home, and his condition has gradually declined since.
A number of years ago, when Mr. Smith found that there were several men named "Charles E. Smith" in Knox County, he adopted the initials of C.E.X. to distinguish his name and used this signature on legal papers. He was familiarly known in recent years as "Uncle Charlie."
Born on February 17, 1867, his birthplace was a mile from his present home in Cedar Township. Mr. Smith was educated in the neighborhood and spent his lifetime in the vacinity. He was engaged for years in farming, and when the Knox County Country Club was formed to establish grounds around Lake Bracken, he became associated with the work and had been engaged ever since.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eva Hutson; a son Phillip who resides on an adjoining farm; a daughter Mrs. Mildred Scroggy, of Maquon; a sister, Mary Snyder, of Minneapolis and a granddaughter, Phylis Smith. He was the survivor of seven brothers in his family.
The body was taken to the Tarrant Funeral Home in Abingdon. Funeral arrangement are incomplete.

Nov. 1939: Funeral services for C.E.X. Smith, resident of Cedar Township south of Lake Bracken, will be held at 2;30 Thursday afternoon from the Tarrant Funeral Home in Abingdon, with the Rev. H.M. Blomer in charge. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Friends may call at the home northeast of Abingdon Wednesday day and evening.
