*Bio by Nita Stolns* James was born on the 15th of December 1833 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, to the parents of a Civil War Vet Thomas Avery Akins (1808 - 1878) and his wife Margaret Sterritt Ross 'Adkins' (1817 - 1881) He was the first born of 8 siblings, 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Named after his mothers last name 'Ross' He came from a family of people who fought in the Civil War. Both his father and James fought in the battle (Massacre) of Sand Creek in Colorado Territory. His father moved many places in his life. He placer mined in El Dorado California as well in Gold Hill In Colorado, Territory. His grandfather fought in the Battle of 1812.

James was in Company D, 3rd Colorado Volunteer Calvary, was 28 when he enlisted in the Civil War in McKean, Licking, Ohio.

He married twice, first at the age of 21 in Atchison County, Mo. to Nancy Jane Higgens (1838 - 1862) They had two children together:
Marietta: 1857 - 1863 (she passed at the age of 6)
Martha Bennett: 1862 - 1936
Nancy passed a few months after her second daughter was born, in Rockport in Atchison, Mo.

James married a second time at the age of 36 to Sarah Buttles Colburn, together they had 5 daughters and one son:
Dora: 1870. She is 15 on the Colorado State Census, no records after.
Lydia Colburn: 1874 - 1937
Margaret Mattie: 1874 (Twin) unknown death.
Ida: 1881, after 1902.
Dollie: 1881 - 1907 (Twin)
Son, Jesse: 1879 - 1881 (Only 2 years old)

His wife Sarah passed in 1907 leaving him a widow. He lives another 12 years, passing on the 30th of April in the year of 1919 in Monte Vista, Rio Grande County, Colorado. Buried in the Colorado State Vet. Center in Homelake Cemetery, in Monte Vista, Rio Grande County, Colorado.
