FUNERAL SERVICES THIS AFTERNOON FOR DR. J. N. JONES, DEAD AT 78
Funeral services are set for 3 pm today at the First Baptist Church for the late Dr. John Newton Jones, Sr, pioneer Morehouse Parish physician and coroner for the past 10 years. Dr. Jones, who was 78, died late yesterday . He had been a patient at St. Francis Hospital for several weeks but had returned to his home, 421 West Hickory Street several days ago and then became a patient at Morehouse General Hospital where he died.

During his many years of practice in Morehouse Parish, Dr. Jones endeared himself to several generations of parish residents. He was typical of the old-time medical practicioner, and was always ready to serve regardless of race or financial status. No hour was ever too late, no night too stormy, no distance to great for Dr. Jones to answer any call. This year, Dr. Jones had been re-elected Coroner for the third successive time. He was also a former member of the Morehouse Parish School Board, and had once served on the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church.

Born in Carthage, Mississippi, Dr. Jones moved to Louisiana at an early age, and came to Bastrop in 1927 from Arcadia. Earning his medical degree at the University of Tennessee in 1905, Dr. Jones too two years of post graduate work at Tulane University in New Orleans. He was a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Morehouse Parish Medical Society and was active in Masonic work. Interment was in Christ Church Cemetery.

John Newton Jones, Jr. of Bastrop - postmaster

Mrs. Vashita Crowell of Little Rock, Arkansas
