James V.B. Cooper

ONEONTA — Dr. James V.B. Cooper, 76, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 7, 1926, in Cooperstown, the son of George F. and Hilda (Cornish) Cooper.

He married Sarah "Betsy" Eunson on April 9, 1949, in Penn Hills, Pa.

Jim grew up in the Milford area and graduated from Milford Central School. He then went on and graduated from Clarkson University receiving his bachelor's degree. Pursuing his master's degree, Jim graduated from Syracuse University and continued on and received his Ph.D. from Penn State University. While he was in Syracuse and also Penn State he taught some courses in the engineering department.

Jim was an electrical engineer and manager at IBM, Owego, for many years retiring in 1983. For a short time while at IBM and also following his retirement, Jim was an adjunct professor at Binghamton University.

He enjoyed tracing his family genealogy, listening to Big Band music, reading and gardening. He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sarah "Betsy" Cooper, of Oneonta; his son, Scott E. Cooper and Catherine Holbert of Bainbridge; and his daughter, Gail E. Cooper of Sidney; two grandchildren, Tori Rifenburg and Ryan Holbert, both of Bainbridge; one brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Adele Cooper of Sangerfield; two nephews and their spouses, Bruce and Debi Cooper of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Kipp and Jane Cooper of Norwich; one sister-in-law, Agnes L. Eunson of Murrysville, Pa.; two nephews and their spouses, Robert S. and Elizabeth Eunson of Rochester, Pa., and Arthur H. and Karen Eunson of Apollo, Pa.; as well as a nephew-in-law, Bob Diana of Oriskany.

Jim was predeceased by a niece, Jan Diana.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Quarles, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date at the Milford Cemetery, Milford.

Calling hours will be offered on Sunday, from 1:30 p.m. until service time, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Dr. James V.B. Cooper.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
