Born in Ontario, Canada, Hetta had moved at an early age with her parents to Southern California. Her father, Joseph, was a dairyman. It appears that Joseph was also an enterprising businessman, having bought and sold several prperties in Southern California. It is said of Joseph that he broght the first herd of holsteins to the area of Buckeye, Arizona (near Phoenix), where he owned property and developed a cheese factory. During the same time, Joseph also owned property at Echo Park in Southern California. He sometimes ran cattle between these two locations. He had a home at both properties, and as the times dictated, Hetta and her siblings were raised at one or the other places.

During the late 1890s Hetta married a man ten years her senior by the name of Harvey Dripes from Santa Monica. Not long afterward, they and Hetta's parents moved to Phoenix. But the marriage between Hetta and Harvew didn't last. Within a year, they were divorced and Harvey returned to Santa Monica. Hetta stayed in Phoenix and worked in a barber shop where she cut and styled hair and did manicures. It was during this time that she met Ernest. Ernest and Hetta married on April 24, 1902 in Phoenix. Not long after, they moved back to Sheldon. This move was, at least in part, due to Ernest's inability to work because of the tendons in his hands tightening and resulting in disablilty.
