Nathaniel was a soldier of the Revolutionary War. He served in Capt. James Lincoln's company, stationed at Hingham, and guarding the shores against incursions of the British during the siege of Boston. His whole service here was eleven months and twenty-eight days. He also served in Capt. Wild's company in 1777 & 1778 at Cambridge as a guard when the prisoners of Burgoyne's army were held there. In about 1780 he and many other Towers moved from Hingham and surrounding towns and settled in the hill towns west of the Connecticut River, where he converted wilderness into well-cultivated and flourishing farms.
