Nicodemus Whitehead- Justice of the Peace in Brown's Beat from about 1890-1920.

On Wednesday afternoon of Nov 4, 1922, Nicodemus Whitehead, who lived near Glen Allen, Fayette County, was called to the great beyond.

Mr Whitehead was about 72 years of age, was born and lived all his life, about two miles south of Glen Allen. He married early in life, Miss (Sarah) Hassie McDonald, in October 1871. Of this union there were 8 sons most of whom are now respected citizens of Fayette County. Mr Whitehead was married a second time in 1879 after the death of his first wife. His second wife was Miss Nancy Lauderdale. Of this marriage, there were four children, on of whom a daughter, Miss Hassie, died in 1908.

Mr Whitehead was a very active man, believing in doing things, rather than talking so much. At the time of his death he owned a fine farm in the community where he was born and reared.

Mr. Whitehead held several positions of honor and trust for about thirty five years. Justice of the Peace of his precinct a leader in everything that was for the uplift of his community and country.

The northern part of Fayette County has sustained a loss in this death that will be felt for many years. He stood for what he thought to be right, whether it rendered him popular or not and while he was a warm friend he would combat what he thought to be wrong with all the force of his character. He was a friend to be desired but a foe to what he conceived to be wrong. The writer knew him for forty years and while he did not belong to the same political party nor the same church Mr Whitehead was big enough to grant to others the right to exercise their own opinion and judgement and at the same time treat with the utmost respect that right in others. Durinng my whole association with him there was never a time when he failed to treat me with the very greatest consideration and respect.

In his official duties, he administered justice as he saw it without fear or favor. And having served his people so long as judge of their Justice court and having many perplexing questions and differences to settle among his neighbors would be but natural if he had failed to have at least some feeling against them, yetI never heard of a one who did not express the fact that in all that he did, he did what he thought to be right.
