"Mrs Susan Love Met Horrible Death, Former Gastonia lady was burned to death Saturday morning at home of her son, Mr. Edgar Love, at Lincolnton.

Gastonia was greatly saddened Saturday by receipt of the distressing news that Mrs. Susan Love, widow of the late Capt. R. C. G. Love and for many years a resident of this city, had met a tragic death by burning that morning at the home of her son, Mr. Edgar Love, of Lincolnton where she had resided since the death of her husband several years ago. No one witnessed the terrible tragedy, Mrs. love being found dead in her room. Between 8 and 9 o'clock a colored attendant employed in the Love home went upstairs to Mrs. Love's room and built a fire while the unfortunate woman was still in the bed. She evidently arose shortly afterwards and went too near the fire, her clothing igniting and burning her body to an extent that caused almost instant death. It is stated that this is the fourth death from burning in the Love family within twenty years. The body was brought to Gastonia and was interred Sunday afternoon in the family plot beside the remains of her late husband in Oakwood cemetery following funeral services held in the First Presbyterian church. The services were held at 2 o'clock and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. L. Wilson, D. D., of Lincolnton, assisted by Rev. Z. Paris, of Lincolnton, and Revs. J. H. Henderlite and J. C. Galloway, D. D., of Gastonia. There was present a large congregation to pay a last tribute to the memory of the deceased. Mrs. Love was a native of Gaston county and many years of her life were spent in Gastonia, her husband, the late Capt. R. C. G. Love, having been one of the pioneer cotton manufacturers of this place. Shortly after his death some years ago she went to make her home with her son at Lincolnton. Her maiden name was Rhyne, she being a daughter of Moses H. Rhyne and a granddaughter of Jacob Rhyne. Her mother was a Hoffman, a daughter of Daniel Hoffman and a sister of Dr. W. H. Hoffman. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. A. Abernethy of Lincolnton; four borthers, Messrs. A. P. Rhyne, Milas Rhyne and Laban Rhyne of Mount Holly and D. E. Rhyne of Lincolnton, and one half-brother, Mr. Bert Rhyne of Mount Holly. Deceased was married to Capt. Love in 1860 and they went to housekeeping on the Ed Whitesides place just west of Gastonia. When Capt. Love, in conjunction with others, established the first cotton mill here they moved into Gastonia and made their home here until his death. Surviving are the following children: John F. Love, of Charlotte; Edgar Love of Lincolnton; Robert A. Love of Cliffside; James Lee Love of the faculty of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.; Mrs S.F. Tait of Brunswick, Ga., and Mrs. W. W. Glenn of Gastonia. Mrs Love was a woman of the highest type of Christian character and was beloved by all who knew her. She will be sadly missed by a large number of relatives and friends. She was 76 years old."
