Josiah was born in Pendleton District, which will become Anderson and Pickens Counties in 1828.

Between 1824 to 1836 Josiah and Jane would have ten children; sons Crosby, David, Augustus, Milton (Glass), Josiah Jr. (Graves), daughters Edna, Susan (Coate), Eliza, son Francis "Frank" (Presua and Waters), and daughter Jane "Jennie' (Walker).

Following the death of his wife Jane, Josiah married Mrs. Mary (Burnett) Brown, of Virginia.
