Coombs, Donald ‘Don'.

—Entered into rest Oct 4, 2006 at the Lincoln Hospital from pneumonia at the age of 96.

He was born on August 4, 1910 at the family home near Harrington, WA to F J ‘Joe' Coombs and Mary (Knapp) Coombs. Don was raised in Harrington, attending both grade school and high school. He was active in school sports. Don was a member of the Harrington Boy Scout troop. He graduated from Harrington High School, in the class of 1928. Don attended Washington State College, school of business, during the years 1929 through 1933 and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa.

In 1936, Don married Evelyn Talkington who was also a 1928 Harrington High School graduate. They had two children, Joe Coombs and Susan Coombs Els. They resided on the family farm one mile south of Harrington. Don was regarded as an excellent and progressive farmer. He was a leading steward of the land with his soil conservation practices and improved wheat yields.

In December of 1955 his wife, Evelyn passed away from an illness. Don married Teddy Stone in 1957 and built a new home on the ranch, where they lived while he was still farming. He was one of the founding charter group of men that formed the Harrington Lions Club in 1945 and then went on to help form Lions Clubs in Davenport and Reardan. Don and Teddy farmed until 1975, then retired to their new home adjacent to the Harrington Golf Club. They enjoyed entertaining their grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many golfing friends.

Teddy passed away in 1990 from a long illness. Don enjoyed going out to the farm to see the daily field activities and visiting with his farmer friends. He remained at his home until recently. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct 11, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, WA, Pastor Cindy Wuts will officiate. Concluding Services and Vault Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Harrington, WA." (Spokesman Review: undated, Oct 2006)
