Jesse Carl Chappell, age 84, of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, in Providence Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born July 29, 1925, in Cassville, Missouri, the son of Jesse and Bertha Viola (Cooper) Chappell, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a brother, Loy Gene Chappell and a nephew, Brian Chappell.

Surviving are one brother, Bob Chappell and wife, Nancy of Conway, Arkansas; two nieces, Cheri (Chappell) Alexander and husband, Kevin and Judy Chappell and six great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Pat Haskins, his loving companion of nineteen years; her children and three loving grandchildren, Randy Scharnhorst, Michael Haskins and Michaela Haskins.

Jesse grew up and graduated from high school in Cassville. Much of his life was spent in Kansas. He lived in Leavenworth over forty years and worked as a fireman for the Ft. Leavenworth Fire Department. Prior to that he worked at Sunflower Ammunitions Depot. Jesse served his country in the United States Army in Korea, where he received a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, a Combat Infantry Badge and a United Nations Service Medal. He worked with the Coast Guard as a Merchant Seaman and with the Boeing Company as a riveter. Jesse was an avid collector of rocks, knives, cameras, books and various other items. He was a volunteer for the Assistance Center and loved to travel.

Jesse leaves behind a large loving family who remember him for his gentle spirit, kind heart and fun loving attitude for life. He was known for his humor and practical jokes. He entertained many with his stories about his various life experiences. We will all miss him tremendously and plan to see him in the future. May God hold him close and bless him.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 21, 2010, in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville, Missouri. Burial with military honors will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter, Missouri.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time Monday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville.
