His obituary lists his survivors as seven nieces: Miss Elizabeth McMillan, Mrs. C.R. Hollenbeck, Mrs. F.R. Young, Mrs. J. N.Young, Mrs. John N. Hooker, all of Elmira; Mrs. Utrecht of Albany; three nephews, Louis Breese of Lower Maple Ave., Harry Crandell and Martin Crandell of Breesport; a niece and two nephews of Iowa.
An analysis of the survivors: Elizabeth, daughter of James McMillan and Harriet Crandell; Mrs. C.R was probably Delia, daughter of John Benson and Sarah Ann Crandell; Mrs. F.R. was probably Bessie Haviland, wife of Fred Young, daughter of Hudson Haviland and Melissa Crandell; Mrs. J.N. was probably Emma, wife of John Young, daughter of Grace Crandell Breese; Mrs. John was Alice Crandell Hooker, daughter of Moses Crandell; Mrs.Utrecht was Irene Crandell Utrecht, daughter of Moses Crandell; Louie Breese, probably son of Mary Alzina Crandell Breese and John Jackson Breese; Harry Crandell, son of Moses.
Martin Crandell was an orphaned boy who was taken in by James' family when his parents died in a fire, according to my Uncle Clifford Crandell, son of Harry. The niece and nephews in Iowa were probably the children of Lewis Crandell, James' brother who resided in Rippey, Green Co., Iowa.
(Note: I received this obituary without the name of the newspaper. I suspect it was in the Elmira Star Gazette. James was the son of Archibald and Betsey Crandell, uncle to my grandfather Harry Crandell, and sole heir to the Crandell farm in Breesport.) Nancy Long ([email protected])
