DEATH OF MRS. DR. CHINN
At the Age of 102 Years in This City Yesterday.
Mrs. Dr. J. G. Chinn died in this city yesterday, at the age of 102 years. Her disease was pneumonia and she had been ill about two weeks. It is not more than two months ago since a TRANSCRIPT reporter called to see Mrs. Chinn and reported a long conversation with her in which she recalled the history of this city, when she used to gather pawpaws and hazel nuts where the Breckenridge monument now stands.
At that time she laughed and said to the reporter that she got stronger as she got older.
She was married thirteen years ago yesterday, and was accordingly 89 years old and her husband was 82 years old. The marriage was reported as that of the oldest couple that had ever been married in this county, and created great interest every where.
Doctor Chinn had once been mayor of this city, and their high social standing together with their remarkable age, attracted to the Main Street Christian Church where they were married in this city, a crowd that could not get into the church.
The prospect that Mrs. Chinn would live to be a hundred years old had created great interest in her in this city, and when finally her one hundredth birthday was celebrated, the desire to see her still live on to phenomenal age attracted much public interest to her. Beside this she was a lady of strong mind and wonderful memory, and was a source of much interest to people who wanted to hear of the early times of this country. Then again, though she took quite a gay and cheerful view of life, she was devoted to her church and had a large circle of friends in that connection. She lately made a present of an organ to her church, and very vigorously discussed the propriety of its use in church with some of the members of that communion who did not think favorably of it.
Her husband survives her and is in fairly good health.
Her funeral will take place at the Main Street Christian church next Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. She has given much in presents to friends and leaves a handsome estate.
