Chesley lived near his father and mother in Augusta County until 1847 when he removed to Schuyler County, Missouri, where he spent his remaining days while following the dual pursuit of farming and stock raising. He wasn't to enjoy this very long as he died in 1854 from yellow fever . His oldest son William Wesley's future father-in-law, Jesse Hunt also died at that time from yellow fever. Chesley's death left eight children from age eight through twent-one with wife Susan Rebecca to try and survive the trials of the 1850's and 60's. Two sons' went off to the Civil War and returned, all of Chesley's children would have made him such a proud father.

Chesley's father William was very impressed with the Kinny's of Augusta County Virgina as well as Chesley being impressed by the Porterfields, makes one wonder if there is somehow a relationship hiding in there somewhere. William named Chesley Kinny after the clerk of the court, Chesley Kinny and in turn Chesley named his youngest son Robert Porterfield Redifer. Chesley's middle name was spelled with an "e" after many years of mistakes on the spelling, so it was just left as Kenny, son Jacob's middle name was Haldeman, and someone changed it to Haldaman.
This writer believes that Chesley's name was Kinny and through the census taker and people not knowing the spelling assumed it was Kenny or mistook the i for an e.

According to the Augusta Historical Society, the name Chesley Kenny or Kinney came from the family of Kinney's that worked in the court house in Staunton, Augusta County Virginia.

General Robert Porterfield had a fine estate twelve miles from Staunton, in Augusta County, on South River. His daughter who was Rebecca Porterfield, married William Kinney, of Staunton, who represented Augusta County for many years in the House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate , as did his father. Jacob Kinny who was Clerk of Augusta, 1793-1818, and after him , his son Chesley Kinney was Clerk, after him his son in law, Erasmus Stribling, and after him Jefferson Kinney, son of Chesley, who was also Clerk of the District Court. And Nicholas Kinney who was Clerk of Superior Court.
