OBITUARY:
Roswell Nelson, a former Farmington mayor, died Wednesday afternoon at San Juan Hospital. He was 65.

A longtime San Juan County resident, Nelson served as mayor and was a member of the town board for a period of about 20 years in the thirties and forties. He was manager of the Farmington Mercantile for 29 years, until 1959 when the firm sold out its business.

Active in many civic affairs, Nelson attended Farmington schools and was an Indian trader prior to his association with the mercantile firm.

The family residence is located at 712 E. La Plata.

Survivors include his widow, Ouida; a daughter, Thelma Reed of Albuquerque; a step-son, Duncan Martin of Arkansas; three sisters, Julia Wheeler of Waterflow, Pearl Biggs of Fruitland, and Martha Mattice of California; four brothers, Leland, Pratt and Edmond all of Farmington and Golden Nelson of Chinle, Ariz., and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James Williams officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with graveside rites to be conducted by the Masonic Lodge.

Pallbearers will be Reuben Taylor, Vernon Bloomfield, Bob Snider, Lyndall Butler, Sam Drolet and Oscar Thomas.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the leukemia research fund.
