The daughter of William C. Shumate and Margaret Eunice Connon, Ethel was a graduate of Mary Institute in St. Louis, Missouri. She went to California in June of 1922 with her mother.


Ethel married Archibald Lincoln "Archie" Carlson on 17 Sep 1922 at the Hollywood Congregational Church in Santa Monica, California. The wedding was only attended by immediate family members of the bride and groom.


After their marriage, Ethel and Archie lived in Venice, California. By 1930, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri and lived with Ethel's widowed mother. She died in 1942. The Carlsons sold the home in 1949 and moved to another house owned by the Shumate family.


Ethel was a homemaker. Archie worked as a professor at the Rubicam Business College until the time of his retirement. They did not have any children.


Ethel lived until 1979. At the time of her death, she was 89 years, 3 months and 17 days old.


Visitation was held only at the time of funeral services at noon on 12 Jun 1979 at Lupton Chapel on Delmar Boulevard in St. Louis. Interment was private.


Ethel was buried next to her husband, Archie, who passed away in 1972.
