John Brooke was a son of Thomas Brooke and his wife Susan Forster of Whitchurch, Hampshire, England. John matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, 11 May 1621, age 16. His older brother, Robert Brooke (1602-1655), had attended the same college from 1618-1620, and remained at Oxford to take his M. A. degree in 1624. Robert was then a minister in the Anglican Church.

In the midst of the English Civil War, Robert brought his family to Maryland, arriving on 30 June 1650, in his own ship, with his family, 28 servants and a pack of foxhounds. Whether John arrived at the same time, or some other time, is not known. Indeed, it's not known if he came to Maryland at all.

Several sources have confused this John Brooke (b. 1605), with Dr. John Brooke (d. 1692/3) in Maryland; but thanks to information discovered by my cousins, Jerry Sherwood and Terry Linthicum, it seems pretty certain these were two different men. And the sources which claim that Mary, wife of Hugh Sherwood, was a daughter of Dr. John Brooke (d. 1692/3) and his wife Judith (d. 1693), seem definitely to be wrong.

I still think it likely that Mary, the wife of Hugh Sherwood, was a Brooke, possibly a daughter of John (b. 1605), and that her family (or perhaps she alone) came with her uncle Robert Brooke (1602-1655), when he arrived in Maryland in 1650.

I've added a different memorial to Dr. John Brooke (d. 1692/3) at Find A Grave # 147627161 and left the one I originally created to Judith # 53797689

I will add more information when I can find it. Many, many thanks to my cousins Jerry Sherwood and Terry Linthicum for bringing my attention to the mistakes I had on the original memorials.
