John's mother died from complications following childbirth in 1916, and the baby, Melvin, died a month later. John's father passed away in 1924.
John eventually returned to Calhoun County, Illinois, near Batchtown, where he was a farmer. He married Mrs. Dorothy "Dottie" (nee Kroeschel) Malone on 22 Jan 1949 in Calhoun County. She was the mother of 2 children from her first marriage.
John battled metastasized lung cancer for the final 6 months of his life. He was a patient at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis for a week prior to his death there at the age of 57 years, 3 months and 27 days.
He was survived by his wife, Dottie; 1 step-son, Larry Malone of Waco, Texas; 1 step-daughter, Delores Ann DeSherlia of Batchtown; 5 grandchildren; and 1 sister, Frieda Stahl of St. Louis, Missouri.
Visitation was held after 7 p.m. on 24 Nov 1962 at the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. A Requiem High Mass was conducted at 9 a.m. on the morning of 26 Nov 1962 at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Batchtown.
John's wife, Dottie, later remarried. She died in 2002.
