Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 26 Sep 1878 p3: "ACCIDENT AT MILO---A correspondent of the Whig writes Dea. G. A. Thatcher, of Bangor, while on his way to the Katahdin Iron Works last Monday week with some friends, met with quite a severe accident at Milo. In attempting to get aboard of the stage at that place his foot slipped and caught in one of the wheels of the coach, breaking one bone of the right leg. Dr. Sprague very kindly took him to his residence and set his leg. He remained there three days, when he took a private team and started for the Katahdin Iron Works to join his friends, showing great courage and perseverance in a man of his age, he being seventy-two years of age."
