Larry was the only child of Lowell Leroy and Marion CHRISTENSON Appelgate. He attended school in Toledo, Iowa; Downey, California; graduating from the Toledo High School.

In November of 1961 Larry married Mary Malin and together they had one son, Douglas Larry Appelgate.

In 1965 the family moved to Mesa, Arizona where they operated a Maid-Rite franchise in conjunction with Larry's parents. After returning to Toledo, Larry went to work for Ferris Plumbing and Heating.

In 1977 Larry and Mary divorced, and in August 1979 Larry married Margaret Elaine EVERTS Massengale. Together in 1986 Larry and Elaine opened Appelgate Sales and Service, a plumbing, heating and bait shop in Toledo on Highway 63N.

Larry loved the outdoors. He spent the fall of the year chasing ducks and geese in the Iowa River bottom near Chelsea, Iowa around Otter Creek WMA. From his one-room school house a top the hill on Hwy E66, the Chelsea cutoff from Hwy 30E, he would watch the flocks of waterfowl trading back-and-forth across the marsh.

When warm weather returned he enjoyed fishing the Iowa River and Otter Creek Lake.
