Death notice in the Lenoir Topic, 18 May 1898:
"Mr. Hugh Nelson, one of the oldest citizens of the county, died rather unexpectedly early this morning. He has been very feeble health for a year or more, having had a stroke of paralysis. He will be buried at Sardis Baptist Church tomorrow at 11 o'clock."
Hugh married Sarah "Sallie" Pendley, who is buried beside him.
The Rev. I.W. Thomas commented on the funeral of Hugh Nelson, The Lenoir Topic, May, 1898: "It was a double funeral, and I was impressed by the contrast in the ages of the deceased. Mr. Nelson was probably 80 years old and the little child hardly two years."
Apparently it was a double funeral. In the same newspaper that the first death notice appeared, there was this note: "A little girl of Mr. Gee Swanson died to-day and will be buried at Sardis tomorrow at 11 o'clock." The little girl's name was Edna, and she was just shy of two years old.
