A son of Daniel Heston & Mary (James) Lovitt, he married (1) Anna Clara Price, a daughter of John & Winifred Scott Price. She died in 1827 in Ohio. He married (2) Ann Hollenback on Aug. 14, 1829. John and Ann had two children Mary Jane Lovitt who married Isaac Morgan, and John W. Lovitt who married Julia Civer.

His children with Anna Price Lovit: Price (b. 1822), Daniel (b. 1824), and Jarvis (b. 1827).
