Aged Man Dies When Struck By Car Sunday Night
On Way Home From Church When Struck by Car Causing Death
One of the saddest accidents in the history of Clarendon was that of Sunday night when Rev. A.V. Neely was struck by a car while crossing East First street on his way home after attending services at the Baptist church.
Rev. Neely, aged 83 was alone at the time of the accident. The car was a large Cadillac driven by Walter Bell accompanied by Miss Jo Veta Wilson and John Blackburn, and was traveling west at a moderate rate of speed. Neither of then saw the victim but felt the impact at a point between the Caraway garage and the Gulf station.
The car was stopped instantly and a hurried call made for the Buntin ambulance, and the unfortunate man taken to the hospital dying on the way.
Rev. Neely had been a minister of the Baptist faith for more than fifty years and had been a resident of this county for some twenty years. At the time of his death he and Mrs. Neely had moved to town and were making their home on East First street. Rev. B.N. Shepherd will have charge of the funeral service at the Baptist church at 2 p.m. today.
