William Mortimer Gilmore II, 64, of Roodhouse, passed away early Monday morning, June 14, 2010, at Passavant Area Hospital.
He was born July 6, 1945, in Jacksonville, the son of William Mortimer and Emily Jane Handler Gilmore. He married Rosemary Kattelman on Sept. 11, 1971, in Quincy, and she survives.
He is also survived by three sons, William M. (wife, Ginger) Gilmore III of Carrollton, Benjamin M. (wife, Tracy) Gilmore of Jerseyville and Nicholas H. (wife, Sandy) Gilmore of Winchester; one daughter, C.C. (husband, Warren) Fischbeck of Alton; 10 grandchildren, Abigail Gilmore, Madison Gilmore, William M. Gilmore IV, Andrew Fischbeck, Mark Fischbeck, Dylan Gilmore, Benjamin M. Gilmore II, Lillian Gilmore, Nicholas H. Gilmore II and Sullivan P. Gilmore; one sister, Patricia (husband, John) Wurster of Temple, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Jan Keating (surviving husband, Michael of Shawnee Mission, Kan.)
Mr. Gilmore attended Roodhouse High School and graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Mo. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Economics from Illinois College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He then returned to the family farm near Roodhouse where he raised grain and livestock for many years. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville where he served on the Finance Council, the Dreams Council and the Family Fun Festival Committee. He taught PSR at St. Michael Parish in Greenfield and was involved in the Quincy Cursillo. He was associated with Burrus Seed Farms as a distributor for several years. He was a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau and was co-founder of the Illinois Tapioca Growers Association. He enjoyed fishing, travelling, reading, spending time at the cabin and snowmobiling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he cherished spending time with his family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, with burial at Richwoods Cemetery, east of Roodhouse. The family will meet friends from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. A prayer service will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
