Lawrence Nelson grew up as a son of a Baptist minister. He had left home and was working for the Gwynn Veneer company when he disappeared after work one day. What followed was a family nightmare and what was to become a horror of injustice for innocent men. Almost two months after his disappearance, a hunter came upon Lawrence Nelson's skeletal remains. The coroner's examination revealed that he had been shot through the neck in a way that would have killed him instantly. The two men who were accused of the crime made unwise comments which were to aid their conviction for the murder. After they had been imprisoned for many years, Governor Thomas Bickett pardoned the two men.
In 1922, a man named Sam Green confessed to the murder of Lawrence Nelson. Then he went home and shot himself.
Lawrence Nelson's father was changed forever. He had erected a tombstone that included the inscription "Murdered and robbed by Hamp Kendall and John Vickers".
The accusing marker has been replaced.
